I began this project by conducting background information on senior pets in shelters nationally and locally. Click below to see a list of references.

Using the information I gathered, I formulated a proposed assessment tool for senior pet welfare in shelters. Click below to download and view the assessment tool.

Each shelter then received a report detailing their results quantitatively and qualitatively, and outlining feasible improvements they could make. Click below to download and view a sample report.

I next interviewed experts on the topic, including board-certified representatives from shelter, hospice, and behavioral medicine.

I then took this assessment tool to Long Island shelters and scored their facilities and practices against it.

Lastly, data from all shelters was analyzed collectively to determine the state of senior pet sheltering on Long Island (publication pending).
